On November 19, 2025, the San Diego Refugee Communities Coalition (SDRCC) hosted a celebration of refugee entrepreneurs under the Refugee Entrepreneurs Acceleration Project (REAP), a program created to uplift and strengthen refugee-led businesses in our community.
REAP builds on the Social Entrepreneurs for Economic Development (SEED) Program, which supported over 400 entrepreneurs with micro-grants, hands-on coaching, technical assistance, and workshops. Building on that foundation and cohort, REAP expanded this work by providing advanced training, capacity-building opportunities, and one-on-one mentorship with experienced business coaches.
The event brought together REAP entrepreneurs, business coaches, community members, SDRCC staff and partners, funders, the UC San Diego Refugee and Immigrant Health Unit, and executive directors from across the coalition to foster deeper connections and networking.
Highlights of the ceremony included:
- Inspiring success stories from SEED and REAP entrepreneurs
- A panel discussion with business coaches and entrepreneurs, sharing their journeys, successes, and lessons learned
- A certificate ceremony featuring remarks from Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, J.D., honoring the achievements and dedication of the entrepreneurs
- A tabling showcase of REAP-founded businesses, giving attendees the opportunity to explore and support the products and services developed through the program
- Closing remarks delivered by Assmaa Elayyat, Deputy Director, County of San Diego, celebrating the impact of REAP and the importance of community support for refugee-led businesses
- Networking opportunities designed to strengthen connections and expand economic opportunities
Small businesses are the heart of our neighborhoods—creating jobs, sharing culture, and driving innovation. Through REAP, refugee entrepreneurs continue to demonstrate resilience, creativity, and determination, helping build a stronger and more inclusive San Diego for everyone.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our funders—The California Wellness Foundation and The City of San Diego—along with our partners, supporters, and community members who make this work possible. We are proud to celebrate these incredible entrepreneurs, our certificate recipients, and the community that stands beside them!
